Car Emergency Kits - Handful of items

Many of us never think about keeping certain ‘emergency’ items in our car until it’s too late. But by just compiling a handful of items, many which may be laying around your house, keeping these items in your trunk or behind the seat, could help you or another drive at some point in your life.
What should you have in your emergency kit? The sky is the limit here. According to the FAA, not sure why they are concerned with cars, they suggest the following:
* Battery powered radio and extra batteries * Flashlight and extra batteries * Blanket * Booster cables * Fire extinguisher (5 lb., A-B-C type) * First aid kit and manual * Bottled water and non-perishable high energy foods, such as granola bars, raisins and peanut butter. * Maps * Shovel * Tire repair kit and pump * Flares
Click and Clack, the famous auto gurus have similar suggestions. Here is their list along with some of their comments:

1. Heavy-Duty Jumper Cables
This is one area on which not to skimp. Why? Because a lot of jumper cables on the market today simply aren't up to snuff. In fact, in our humble opinion, most jumper cables stink. They're either too short, too thin or won't stay flexible in the cold — which is when you really need them.
When you're shopping for cables, we'd recommend that you buy ones that are at least 20 feet long, which gives you plenty of length with which to work. They should be at least four-gauge, and thicker if possible. And, finally, they should be made of copper, so there's less resistance.
2. Tire pressure is very important — it affects everything from handling to braking to gas mileage to tire wear. We recommend that you never use one of those cheap, pencil-type tire gauges. They're notoriously inaccurate. And don't trust the gauge on the air hose at Phil's Quikie Gas either. Gauges at gas stations are often completely out of whack as well.
Tip: Don't check tire pressure after you've been driving. The friction of the tires on the road creates heat and will give you the wrong reading. Check the tire pressure *before* you start driving. What is the "correct" tire pressure? It's different for all vehicles. Look in your owner's manual, which will usually refer you to a label on the doorpost.
3. Breaking down on the side of the road is bad enough without a bread truck plowing into you. We recommend you have a sturdy, heavy triangular folding reflector on hand.
Tip: The best ones have a base that's loaded with sand so it won't blow over when that semi comes barreling down the road.
4. Someday, somewhere, you'll be really glad you have a can of Fix-a-Flat in your car.
If you do get a flat, you'll want to use Fix-a-Flat as soon as possible, before all the air escapes from the tire. Otherwise, the tire may separate from the wheel, and then it won't work.
5. A safe container for carrying gas.
Tip: No matter how desperate you are, you should never, ever carry gas in milk jugs or anything else that's not designed for carrying fuel.

The Baby VW - Fox

The Golf and The Polo both command large portions of the supermini market. In the same way that certain lagers are advertised as being “reassuringly expensive”, the VW range has billed itself as the connoisseur’s choice of hatchback. So what happens when Volkswagen go cheap? With prices starting as low as £6,625, Volkswagen are really stooping below their usual price bracket. The VW Fox is here to put its case forward.
The first impressions of the Fox are about as positive as they possibly could be; it essentially looks like a slightly smaller Polo, which is pretty much all you could expect. The trademark boxy looks bare the VW hallmarks that have etched themselves into automotive history. To sweeten the deal, the Fox is also taller and wider than most of its competition. So far, so good.

I am an advocate of the popular adage “you get what you pay for”, so to be honest I wasn’t expecting a great deal from the Fox’s drive. And I didn’t get much either. But we have to put this into some kind of perspective, for six and a half grand you can’t expect the comfort or styling of the Golf...it is double the price of the Fox after all. What you do get is a car that has been specifically tuned to pull at low revs. This makes it perfect for city driving, but as soon as you get out on the motorway or country roads, the Fox will struggle. The cars weight is also a bit of a problem when you consider the 1.2 Litre petrol engine only has 55bhp, again it will perform well from the traffic lights, but take it beyond 50 mph and you will hear the effort.
The interior of the Fox doesn’t exactly set the heart racing either. Its grey, it’s very plastic and there are no added gadgets bar the CD player. Again I have to revert to the price argument. For slightly over six grand you can hardly expect in-built sat nav or even air conditioning (which is available to install but will cost you a whopping £925!). The closest you get to flair as standard on the VW Fox are the two cup holders. What you get is...well...functional. The Fox isn’t a particularly pleasant place to sit for extended periods of time, but for the 10 minute drive to the supermarket and back, it will suffice amicably.
The handling isn’t bad at all for the price bracket and the Fox’s steering feels light but intuitive. The Fox feels positively agile compared to some of the supermini competition. If they could match the peppy steering with an engine that could maximise the handling potential, then the Fox would be a fun drive. As it stands, it can feel frustrating at times; you want to go faster, but the heavy bodywork and struggling engine are holding you back.
As a result of all of this I found driving the Volkswagen Fox to be a confusing experience. I knew that I wasn’t particularly comfortable, or enjoying the ride so much, but I know if I bought one I’d be so blown over to own a genuine VW for less than £7000 that I would probably be constantly sporting a smile anyway.
In summary, if you don’t drive for fun or particularly long distances then the VW Fox is a cheap, reliable car that has enough space to accommodate four people comfortably. For weekly trips to the shops you would be pretty silly to splash out any more than the Fox costs. It’s practical, stylish and has the VW badge...just don’t expect too much and you won’t be disappointed.

Used Car - Value Buy

The path to buying a reasonable used car is littered with buyers who didn't follow simple and straightforward advice and ended up with some absolute lemons. There are pitfalls that are easy to avoid once you know about them, and there are also lots of other things that you need to do before parting with your cash for a second hand motor. The first thing to do is your research! Find out the average selling price of the vehicle you are after. Bear in mind that condition and mileage can affect the value of the vehicle, as can its involvement in an accident. So do ask "Has this car been in an accident? Is it a reconstructed car?" These are very important questions as the performance, reliability, safety and value of cars can be affected by either of these. How to finance your carVery few of us are in a position to be able to pay cash to buy the car of our dreams, so what other alternatives are there?

The most common method of buying a used vehicle is by taking out a car loan. The crucial thing to consider when you take out a car loan is how much interest you will pay. Basically, the higher the APR (Annual Percentage Rate) the more you will pay in interest. The percentage APR that you will pay tends to be tied very closely to your credit score; i.e. the higher your credit rating the lower the APR you will have to pay. Of course, loan firms will try to get the highest rate for their products that they can, so as well as shopping around for your car, you should also shop around for your car finance. Also remember that the longer the term of the loan the more you will be paying in interest, make sure you can comfortably afford the monthly payments and have money spare to maintain and run your vehicle. Caveat Emptor - Buyer beware! There's an old legal saying that has its basis in Latin when it comes to buying goods - caveat emptor; it means "buyer beware" and the advice still applies today, especially if you are going ahead with a sale from a private individual and not through a garage.

Most reputable second hand car dealers offer warranties and guarantees when you buy a used vehicle from them, so if something goes wrong you can go back to the garage. Dealer prices tend to be higher to incorporate those guarantees as well as their profit margin. However, if you buy from a private individual you have limited protection. But, there are a lot of bargains out there and the best thing before you buy from a private individual is to take along a mechanic who can give the car a once-over and put your mind at rest on its mechanical reliability. Hopefully, you will avoid buying a lemon if you follow our top tips on buying a used car!

Car Auctions - Need to Know Tips

Some people don't know about the fees involved in car auction there are fees for both sides of they sale in most cases. The buyer will have to pay a fee, which is usually a percentage of the sale price and the buy most of the time will have to pay the same kind of thing. These fee are not usably too high but you will need to take them into account when you car bidding on a particular car. When you are choosing a car auction it is often best to try and find one that will suit your needs. There are many different types of car auction some specialize in particular types of cars. There are car auctions that will sell nothing but used car some will sell nothing but second hand cars but most will sell a combination of both. If you are in the market for a second hand car then you are best to find and auction that will have more of that type of car. Some car auctions get very detailed in what types of cars they sell some will sell ex-government car and repossessed cars.

The best thing you can do is finding out exactly what you want and then find a car auction that does nothing but that. When you have decided on what it is your looking for all you need know is to find it. There are allot of lace you can look for a car auction some car auction will advertise in the mainstream media but most will only advertise in thing like car sale magazines and things of that type. In some areas car auctions are held on a very regular bases and are held at the same place a the same time. But some will move around from town to town and others will only hold them when there is enough stock to sell. Before you attend your first car auction you should first try any old place just to get a feel of how it all works and you will learn what to expect. You will not be to surprise because most of them are pretty straightforward but there are some that get very intense and are often used by professional car buyers. That is when you will need to know you stuff to compete with the pros.

Review Jaguar XF - Mid-size luxury car

The Jaguar XF is the latest sports sedan or mid-size luxury car from Jaguar Cars. First seen in 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Jaguar XF was formally launched in 2008 with its first unit delivered to their customer in March 2008. The new XF took over the place of its predecessor—the S-Type. The development of the XF is done in Coventry, UK and its production line is in Castle Bromwich, Birmingham, UK. The Jaguar XF was named the Car of the Year by the prestigious “What Car?” magazine in January 2008. Another award, the Car of the Year 2008 award was given to the Jaguar XF by the “What Diesel?” magazine. XF was also named The Best Executive Car 2008.

Before the actual launching of the Jaguar XF, Jaguar Cars has already come up with the Concept-XF or the Jaguar C-XF. This concept car was first exhibited in the North American International Auto Show held at Detroit, Michigan. The C-XF served as the preview of the now released Jaguar XF model. The C-XF design that was unveiled in January 3, 2007 had the newest design strategy that departed from the retro designs of the classic cars and other predecessors of the Jaguar C-XF. The design of the final Jaguar XF just had a little variation from the C-XF design that is notable in the nose and its front lights. The mesh grille carrying the Jaguar badge is still present serving as the distinctive feature of all the Jaguar cars. The exterior is somewhat amazing almost resembling the concept car.

The XF wheels are also designed to fit the car’s visual exteriors. Several mags and wheel designs are available for future exterior modifications. The XF wheels are available in 18” and 19” alloy construction. The Supercharged car is the only car of this type that can be fitted with its standard 20” alloy wheels. The interior of the XF gives a relaxing and luxurious mood to its riders. The driver-friendly 7” touch-screen control makes driving easier and more comfortable. The blue phospor halo illumination that emphasizes the XF instruments and meters make it more relaxing to the eyes at night.

The XF has an automatic climate control system that includes the rotating vents that slowly and quietly roll and almost disappear when not in use. Taking the place of a manual or automatic transmission selector is the drive selector or rotary dial that pops out when pressing the engine start or stop button. This is the latest shift-by-wire technology that gives precise shifting and at the same time adding to the picturesque view of the interior. Most of the interiors are made with exquisite wooden materials with modern aluminum linings and leather seats showing the finest craftsmanship used by the XF. The interior lightings are activated and controlled by touching the lights’ plastic covers.

The Jaguar XF cars are available in different engines ranging from 2.7-liter and 3.0 V6 Diesel and Petrol to the 4.2-liter V8 Petrol Natural and Supercharged. The 4.2-liter V8’s compact and lightweight construction is the most used engine because of the big performance that it offers in its small all-aluminum construction. The V8 uses four valves per cylinder and four overhead camshafts in its variable camshaft phasing. The natural V8 can give 310 lb-ft torque and 300 bhp in an effortless performance. The supercharged can give 413 lb-ft torque and 420 bhp with its rotor-type supercharger.

The XF’s transmission uses a six-speed automatic transmission system with superb character. The automated system responds to the way the car is driven and according to the road conditions in giving the smoothest gearshift. The drive selector in the driver’s panel is another latest innovation in transmission that is used by the XF. If you want to combine luxury and comfort in your sports car then you better be ready with the leap of the Jaguar XF. Check your local dealers for their latest Jaguar XF.

Are Diesel or Hybrid Cars For You

While everyone is looking to a greener planet, car makers are also doing their best to come out with newer environmentally friendly models. Technological advancement is what is propelling the automotive industry to come out with fuel efficient and zero emission engines, not forgetting the need to search for replaceable energy source as the new alternative power source.Diesel has been a long time favorite for fuel efficient drivers. With the high compression engine and diesel having higher energy content, it has a potential of pitting against gasoline vehicles in terms of power over efficiency.
This can be seen in Audi R10 being a diesel powered car winning the Le Mans 24 hour endurance race consecutively thanks to not having to pop in the pit stop to refuel as frequently as other competitors. Considering the smelly diesel puffs from buses ages ago, it might not be a good choice as an environmentally friendly car. When we look at hybrid vehicle, we can only look at vehicles with two power sources being slapped together as one. Usually a combination of gasoline engine with an electric motor‘s assistance. The green part of a hybrid vehicle is that the car is smart enough to switch off the gasoline engine and make use of the electric motor at certain time, reducing the petrol used.

Although the theory sounds flawless, actual efficient driving on a hybrid requires a unique driving style in order to get more miles out of the engine. The promising hybrid vehicles are the topic of discussion these days. Already out there some of the hybrid vehicles such as popular Toyota Prius, Honda Civic Hybrid, and numerous other common production cars with a ‘Hybrid‘ or ‘H‘ emblem stuck to the boot. The wonder of a hybrid is the energy balancing capability of both motors present in the car itself. Say for instance the car will use the petrol engine to propel the car from standstill and to a stage where the car is cruising, the electric motor will be driving the car, putting the pistons to rest. This intelligent concept also includes the regenerative braking capability that charges up the car‘s battery so that the electric motor can use it for cruising.
On the other hand, diesel powered vehicles still works the same as a combustion engine. The only difference is newer diesel engines delivers higher power and torque rating thanks to technologies such as common rail diesel engines. With torque being the strong point of diesel cars, it needs a low rev to get to the highest torque compared to petrol engines. Take the Mercedes models for an example, with a CDI engine, some with smaller capacity diesel engine outperforms higher capacity petrol cars. The longer cruise range and low emission green engine makes it a selling point too.Speaking of which, since hybrid vehicles are powered by a combination of electric motor and gasoline engine, why not a turbocharged common rail diesel engine slapped with an electric motor side by side? Diesel hybrids might be on the way soon once car manufacturers figure out how to balance the heavy gadget filled common rail diesel engine together with heavy battery packs to create a better hybrid. As the hybrid makers say, all they need is torque to move the vehicle from standstill ~ so why not use a diesel engine?

The Power of Lightweight

Speed freaks out there will probably dream of driving a super vehicles such as the Lamborghinis or the Ferraris. To them, those are the only automobile that can get them from zero to hundreds of miles per hour as fast as they could change gears; to a top speed of not being able to be captured by the speed cameras along the highway. Yes, these cars have always been the common yet popular image on most pin up posters for these cars, with their monstrous V8 or V12 engine that produces the lightning-like fast image in your mind. But today there are new toys in the market that might just change your ‘super automobile is king‘ mindset that you have always had..Super automobiles depend on the high powered engine to propel the car. A simple rule: give higher power to a car and the car will move faster.
This leads to super cars with V12 engines with ratings of over 500bhp. One such super car today is the infamous Bugatti Veyron that incorporates two engines producing near 1000bhp. This gives the acceleration of the car from 0 to 62mph in just 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 253mph. Other similar super cars production like the Koenigsegg CCX also hone an 800+ bhp engine resulting in an astonishingly fast machine.Another scientific rule came into the car manufacturing scene lately. On contrary to increasing the power output of an engine, why not reducing the weight of a sports car? This has been a proven theory on the race tracks as Formula 1 cars are actually very light if compared to their size and footprint.
The lighter the car is, even with a moderate powered engine, the car can be just as fast as any other super car. Car makers are now playing around with the power-to-weight ratio, creating normal vehicles that can be pitted against popular cars. Weight reduced race cars have always been popular ever since the early years of automotive racing. Colin Chapman‘s Caterham Seven is a good example of small, nimble, and yet powerful race car on track. With its lightweight heritage, Lotus cars have spearheaded the lightweight super autos with their Lotus Elise, which is both lightweight powerful, and well balanced in handling. Recent models of Lotus Elise such as the supercharged version with a Toyota power plant, which promises a 0 to 62mph run in just 4.3 seconds. Lighter super vehicles to be noted nowadays are the Ariel Atom, the Caterham R500, and the KTM X-Bow.
These ‘toys‘ are relatively small and light compared to other super cars by nearly half the size and weight. Born from the racing legacy, these super lightweights uses ultra lightweight materials such as Carbon Fiber, Titanium, and Magnesium. With their small and nimble body, they also outperform other super cars slightly in terms of handling.Does this mean that speed freaks can get a fast ride at a relatively cheap price because of the little amount of materials used? But do consider the idea that you are paying for a car without proper doors and a windscreen that every other super automobile has. There is also the factor of the super car‘s ‘oomph‘ status to show off to the public. Worry not; there is the Lamborghini LP560-4, which is light too.

Washing Your Car

The spring and summer seasons are rapidly approaching, and that means that more people will be concerned over how their vehicle looks. For whatever reason, warmer weather seems to attract people like magnets. Suddenly, you're spotting your next door neighbor, who hardly comes out of their house, driving around the neighborhood in some old classic car that they haven't driven since the summer before. Car lovers can look forward to car shows and block parties in which people bring their toy cars to show off to one another.Whether you live in the middle-of-nowhere or own five houses in Beverly Hills, one thing is certain, people love to wash their cars and/or have their cars washed! There is, perhaps, something more significant about washing your car though.

What is it about having a car look clean on the exterior- especially when the weather is nice? In essence, it can be said that you are what you drive. Even if you have a car that is only worth $500, the fact remains that if you have kept up with the maintenance and are keeping it clean, who has to know what it's worth? Many people take pride in their vehicles the same way that you or I would take pride in our own appearance to others. Therefore, having a filthy car is akin to walking around in dirty clothes that you haven't washed for days. Drive through any of the ritzy neighborhoods near where you live and nine times out of ten you'll find a few things to be true.

First, most people who have a lot of money tend to invest more in sedans. You'll rarely see bulky SUVs laying around, unless of course there are children involved. Secondly, everyone's cars are typically really clean- to the point where it looks as if they just picked up the car that day!For the pickier drivers out there, there are plenty of self-car washes. These are the kind in which you drive your car up to what looks like a see-through garage in which you can put money and wash your car by hand. Others aren't quite as committed, preferring to bring their vehicles to a major gas station that has a drive-thru car wash in which the driver purchases a ticket to drive their car through an automatic car wash. And then, of course, there are those who don't want to be bothered at all and will pay to have their car washed by others. Whichever method is the one you choose, just be sure that if you're paying someone else to wash your vehicle, be specific with them about what you expect as well as what you want done.

There is no reason you should have to clean your car again after you just had it cleaned!Sometimes when you go through an automatic car wash, you need to remember to always be careful. If you are sitting in your car, make sure that all of the windows are rolled up tightly. If you're having your car washed by someone else, make sure that there are no valuable belongings laying around in the areas that are being cleaned. If need be, if you know that you're going to have your car washed, take these items out ahead of time.

Windshield Crack Repair

It‘s happened to all of us, driving along the highway minding our own business, when a chip of stone kicked up by the car in front pings against the window and chips it. It‘s one of the most frustrating things that can happen to your car, and considering the size of the damage, it is disproportionately expensive to put right. Many people take their car to the repair shop with a stone chip in the windshield, and then get charged for a replacement at a cost of hundreds of dollars. However, this need not be the case. Under many circumstances, instead of replacing the whole windshield, you can use a windshield repair kit to fix small cracks and chips in the glass at a fraction of the cost.

A typical car windshield is made up of a laminate of at least two layers of glass with a polymer resin sandwiched between them This gives the glass huge strength, and in the event of an accident, the resin is designed to hold the pieces of glass together and stop them showering into the car and causing injury.Because of the layered structure of a windshield, crack repair is possible. Usually in the event of a stone chip, only one layer of glass is damaged, with the underlying layers remaining undamaged. This means that it is possible to make the windshield more stable, and prevent the damage getting any worse, without having to replace the whole windshield. If the stone chip has gone through more than one layer of the glass, or is positioned right in the centre of the driver‘s field of vision, then you should consider replacing the wind shield completely, because under such circumstances, the damage could cause impairment to the ability of the driver.

If you are able to repair the windshield, you should carry out the work as soon as possible after the damage occurs. If it is left too long, the cracks can spread out across the screen thanks to the pressure of the air pushing against the glass when you are driving. As the cracks spread, the glass becomes weaker and weaker, and can eventually simply shatter under the pressure, which is obviously highly dangerous for the driver and any passengers in the car.The actual method of repairing a stone chip or small crack in the glass is simple with the appropriate windshield repair kits. Although different manufacturers package the kit differently, the actual method used is roughly the same.Windshield crack repair is carried out by injecting a clear resin into the crack or chip under pressure in order to completely fill any spaces, then the resin is cured rapidly using a special light that leaves it as hard as rock.

If it is carried out properly there should be no distortion of vision when you repair windshield crack damage, and in many cases, the resin bonds so well with the edges of the cracks that the actual damage is much less visible and distracting for the driver. As well as small windshield repair kits designed for a single use, larger professional kits are also available that contain enough resin and equipment to perform up to 100 repairs. Because it is a fairly straightforward task to repair cracked windshields using the proper tools, there are many companies available who will carry out the service on your behalf, although at a much higher cost than doing the work yourself – albeit a lot less than you would have to pay for an entirely new windshield. The windshield on your car is there to protect you at all times, but it must be clear to see out of to help you avoid any trouble in the first place. It is vitally important to repair any damage to it, no matter how small it is, to ensure your safety, and also to prevent it getting worse and potentially costing you a lot of money.

Average fuel consumption of the new model in the EU test cycle is a mere 6.2 litres/100 kilometres, equal to 45.6 mpg imp. In CO2 emissions, this means a rating of just 165 grams per kilometre.

All-round driving pleasure and supreme efficiency have made the BMW X3 a genuine trendsetter, contributing significantly to the car's worldwide success. Indeed, it was the BMW X3 which for the first time carried over the features and qualities typical of a Sports Activity Vehicle into a new segment, total sales of the X3 now amounting to more than 500,000 units. For a long time the BMW X3 was the only premium vehicle in its class, and to this day it remains the epitome of driving dynamics on the road as well as agility and supreme traction off the beaten track. And last but certainly not least, the BMW X3 offers an unparalleled balance of performance and fuel economy throughout the entire competition segment of BMW X models. Thanks to the outstanding and truly convincing qualities of xDrive also available in many other BMWs, BMW remained the world's most successful manufacturer of all-wheel-drive vehicles in the premium segment also in 2008.
Over and above such outstanding efficiency and fascinating agility, the BMW X3 also offers truly excellent reliability. In 2009, for example, the X3 was lauded for the second time in a row with the renowned Yellow Angel Award by Germany's and, indeed, the world's largest motoring club, the Allgemeine Deutsche Automobilclub (ADAC), for outstanding all-round quality. Proceeding from the findings of ADAC's breakdown helpers famous throughout Germany as "Yellow Angels", this leading motoring club once again acknowledged the BMW X3 as the most reliable vehicle on the road in Germany. This car claimed to be a tailor made machine for every customer as it was being released in two variants – sports and luxury. The car after being up for sale in the markets has kept its promise and the two variants have a lot more differences than just of looks. While the Sports model has lesser grille slats and is characterized by an eye catching Mercedes Benz emblem on it, the Luxury model has extra chrome grilles and the famous emblem takes the pride of the place on the hood. Although it is said that the style and design of the new Mercedes C class is inspired by the Mercedes Benz S class it turns out that the newly launched car has a statement of its own to make and not just look like a miniaturized version of the S class. Safety, class and comfort are also on the top priority of the new Mercedes C class and the revised suspension and steering make the C class more nimble.
The car has been designed to be a couple of inches longer and wider that makes a huge difference to the comfort of the passengers. This makes the new C class around 1.8inches wider at the wheelbase than its previous model. At the technological front, the C class brings cutting edge technology to the industry through the use of a digital prototype which enabled the Cars to get new standards of accident safety, aerodynamics, chassis behavior and comfort along with better acceleration. Both the sports and luxury variants have a V-6 engine with the C300 Luxury model offering a 3.0liter 228HP one and the C350 offering a bigger 3.5liter, 268HP one. The C300 Luxury and C350 Sports models get a seven-speed automatic gearbox; the C300 has a six speed manual transmission. There is a new Hydraulic shock system provided in all the variants which has a feature called Agility Control that does adaptive damping. The interiors of both the variants are extremely polished following the tradition and give a plush, swanky feel. While the interiors of the luxury variant are more sophisticated with wood and leather finishes, those of the sports model are replaced by metal panels. A power sunroof, power front seats with lumbar support, twin zone climate control, Bluetooth connectivity and a central controller with a larger than your imaginations display screen are few of the luxuries provided as the standard equipments in the sedan.
The sports model has sport shocks and improved springs to provide a crisper ride and better suspension tuning. Based on the differences in technology, looks and style, you can choose a model that suits your personality. This legendry icon of rich plush luxury is sure to sweep your heart away with either of the two variants of its newly launched model.

Tips Installing Your Own Rear View Mirror

Increase visibility and safety with a new rear view mirror.

Automotive manufacturers pump out thousands of cars a week. This process can lower prices but may result in loss of quality. Take the rear view mirror for example. It is held on by a strong adhesive but heat, humidity, and varying temperatures can weaken the bond.

Luckily, companies take these flaws into account and already have replacements available. Here’s a quick guide to replacing your own rear view mirror. Don’t worry, you won’t need a mechanic.

Pre-Installation Tips:

Gather the following tools and materials. 1. Rubbing alcohol.

2. Paper towels or a soft cloth

3. Scissors

4. Flat-head screwdriver

5. Flat-bladed scraper

6. A pencil

7. Pliers

8. Your new replacement kit

Installation Steps:

Tip- Humidity can affect the adhesive. Try to install on a particularly dry day.

1. Using the scraper, remove all the gunk where the mirror was formerly attached. Using a sharp blade is important to remove all adhesive.

2. Clean the area. Pour some alcohol onto a paper towel or cloth and wipe down the area where you will be mounting the new mirror. This will remove any last grease, oil, or residue. Wait a few minutes after cleaning for the area to dry.

3. Examine your new mirror. At the attachment point there should be a small u-shaped button. You MUST remove this button. It may be secured with a small screw or snapped into place. You can either use the pliers to press down the metal flange holding it, or use the screwdriver to pry it out.

4. After removing the button, very carefully use the scraper to remove all traces of adhesive from its face. Repeat the cleaning process with the button.

5. Once the button is dry, place it on the windshield where you would like the mirror to attach. Make sure that is it exactly where you want it because it will not be easy to remove.

6. Make sure that curved end of the button is facing UPWARD. Then, using the pencil, trace the button. This way, you can remove the button, and see where the mirror will be installed. Set the button aside for now.

7. Open your replacement kit and read the instructions carefully. You should find a small tube of adhesive, a vial of adhesive activator, and maybe a spare button.

8. Remove the activator. Squeeze the vial to break the glass, allowing fluid to soak the swab.

9. Liberally cover the market area on the windshield with the activator. You can also coat the inner face of the button, if you like. Wait five minutes for both surfaces to dry.

10. Remove the adhesive tube from the kit and cut off the tip with the scissors. Squeeze a large drop onto the center of the inner face of the button. Don’t put more than one large drop.

11. Place the glue side of the button onto the marked are of your windshield, curved end up. Press and hold it against the glass for over a minute.

12. When you release pressure, the button should be secured to the windshield. Once the button is on the glass, wait at least an hour before continuing.

13. Now attach your new mirror. Carefully slide the attachment onto the button and push down until you hear a click. You may need to fasten the button with a small screw.

Finito! You’re done. You can discreetly check out the chick behind you while stopped at a red light.

Wiper Blades - Halogen-Hardened Rubber

Worn, torn, split and ripped are words that should describe your designer jeans, not your wiper blades. Wiper blades are probably the last thing on your mind, but take one minute out of your busy day to check out your blades’ condition. Safety is fun.

It’s raining. Actually it’s pouring. Golf ball-sized rain droplets are pounding on your windshield. You flip on your wipers, which only make matters worse. As you bob your head, struggling to catch a glimpse of clarity through cloudy, streaked glass you will probably curse and think something like, “OMG, what is wrong with me? Why didn’t I replace these stupid things?!”

Guess what? Life doesn’t have to be this hard. Most experts say you should replace your wiper blades every six to twelve months for optimum performance and driving visibility. That’s because the materials don’t last forever-- natural rubber deteriorates over time. Halogen-hardened rubber and synthetic rubber provide longer life, but eventually fall victim to environmental factors as well. Think about it. Your wipers are exposed to nature’s elements 100% of the time. Exposure to sunlight and ozone will cause the rubber to age, even if you barely use your wipers.

The irony is you really only think about your wipers when you wished you had replaced them -- times when you vision is obscured by water, road splash, sleet or snow on the windshield. But good visibility requires wipers that are in good condition. If the wipers are chattering, streaking or otherwise failing to wipe cleanly and consistently, you need new blades -- Pronto!

But what really happens to wiper blades over time? As they age, they lose much of their flip-over flexibility thus losing their ability to wipe cleanly. They can develop a permanent set or curvature, which prevents full contact with the windshield. This is more likely to occur on vehicles that are parked outside in the hot sun all day. The sun bakes and hardens the rubber making them streak and chatter because they’ve taken a set and won’t follow the curvature of the windshield. Not only are they dangerous, but annoying.

Cold weather can also affect your blades’ life. Freezing temperatures make rubber hard and brittle, increasing the tendency to crack and split. For you snowy drivers, your wipers can become clogged with ice and snow, preventing the holder from distributing spring tension evenly over the blade. The blade then "freezes up" and leaves smudges as it skims across the glass. Driving in the snow is hard enough.

Heavy use can take a toll on your wiper blades, too. Dust, abrasives, road grime and even bug juice wear away the edge that allows the blades to wipe cleanly. As blades lose their edge, water gets under the blade and remains on the glass. The result is reduced visibility and poor wiping action.

If your blades are chattering, streaking or doing a lousy job of wiping, it is time for a replacement. Blades are cheap and easy to replace.

You should also check your windshield washer system. Do both squirters work? A nozzle could be clogged with dirt or a hose may be kinked or loose. Do the nozzles need adjusting? Does the washer pump deliver an adequate stream of solvent? The vehicle may have a weak washer pump, or a clogged, kinked or loose hose. The wiper blade performance depends on the condition of the wiper arms and holders. The amount of spring tension on the wiper arm, the number of pressure points or claws that hold the blade, and the design of the blade itself all affect the blade’s wiping ability. If the springs in the arms are worn out, the wipers may not be pressing firmly enough to wipe your windshield clean. In this case, replacing the blades won’t make any difference because the problem is weak arms not bad blades.
