The little tie rod ends on non R&P screw into a sleeve with both right-handed threads and left-handed threads.
When you have the toe-in set on your vehicle, the technician can loosen two bolts and nuts and twist this sleeve¡...this makes the tires go out or in.
It is very important to have these tie rod ends greased every time you have the oil and filter changed in the engine.
The importance in greasing them is to keep them moving freely.
If they get dry they will wear out quickly.
If they wear out, they can come apart.
If they come apart, you won't be able to steer your vehicle. Not a good thing.
Now, grant you, on some of the newer vehicles the manufacturers decided to leave off the grease fittings.
These tie rods come pre-packed and will last a very long time.
But, you should have them 'checked ' at each oil change.
Some have a threaded hole for the grease fitting, but they have a small cap over them.
You can remove the cap and add a fitting so you can grease it.
Any time you replace a tie rod end, be sure to grease it, and the others if you can.

Tips Installing Your Own Rear View Mirror

Luckily, companies take these flaws into account and already have replacements available. Here’s a quick guide to replacing your own rear view mirror. Don’t worry, you won’t need a mechanic.

Pre-Installation Tips:

Gather the following tools and materials. 1. Rubbing alcohol.

2. Paper towels or a soft cloth

3. Scissors

4. Flat-head screwdriver

5. Flat-bladed scraper

6. A pencil

7. Pliers

8. Your new replacement kit

Installation Steps:

Tip- Humidity can affect the adhesive. Try to install on a particularly dry day.

1. Using the scraper, remove all the gunk where the mirror was formerly attached. Using a sharp blade is important to remove all adhesive.

2. Clean the area. Pour some alcohol onto a paper towel or cloth and wipe down the area where you will be mounting the new mirror. This will remove any last grease, oil, or residue. Wait a few minutes after cleaning for the area to dry.

3. Examine your new mirror. At the attachment point there should be a small u-shaped button. You MUST remove this button. It may be secured with a small screw or snapped into place. You can either use the pliers to press down the metal flange holding it, or use the screwdriver to pry it out.

4. After removing the button, very carefully use the scraper to remove all traces of adhesive from its face. Repeat the cleaning process with the button.

5. Once the button is dry, place it on the windshield where you would like the mirror to attach. Make sure that is it exactly where you want it because it will not be easy to remove.

6. Make sure that curved end of the button is facing UPWARD. Then, using the pencil, trace the button. This way, you can remove the button, and see where the mirror will be installed. Set the button aside for now.

7. Open your replacement kit and read the instructions carefully. You should find a small tube of adhesive, a vial of adhesive activator, and maybe a spare button.

8. Remove the activator. Squeeze the vial to break the glass, allowing fluid to soak the swab.

9. Liberally cover the market area on the windshield with the activator. You can also coat the inner face of the button, if you like. Wait five minutes for both surfaces to dry.

10. Remove the adhesive tube from the kit and cut off the tip with the scissors. Squeeze a large drop onto the center of the inner face of the button. Don’t put more than one large drop.

11. Place the glue side of the button onto the marked are of your windshield, curved end up. Press and hold it against the glass for over a minute.

12. When you release pressure, the button should be secured to the windshield. Once the button is on the glass, wait at least an hour before continuing.

13. Now attach your new mirror. Carefully slide the attachment onto the button and push down until you hear a click. You may need to fasten the button with a small screw.

It’s raining. Actually it’s pouring. Golf ball-sized rain droplets are pounding on your windshield. You flip on your wipers, which only make matters worse. As you bob your head, struggling to catch a glimpse of clarity through cloudy, streaked glass you will probably curse and think something like, “OMG, what is wrong with me? Why didn’t I replace these stupid things?!”

Guess what? Life doesn’t have to be this hard. Most experts say you should replace your wiper blades every six to twelve months for optimum performance and driving visibility. That’s because the materials don’t last forever-- natural rubber deteriorates over time. Halogen-hardened rubber and synthetic rubber provide longer life, but eventually fall victim to environmental factors as well. Think about it. Your wipers are exposed to nature’s elements 100% of the time. Exposure to sunlight and ozone will cause the rubber to age, even if you barely use your wipers.

The irony is you really only think about your wipers when you wished you had replaced them -- times when you vision is obscured by water, road splash, sleet or snow on the windshield. But good visibility requires wipers that are in good condition. If the wipers are chattering, streaking or otherwise failing to wipe cleanly and consistently, you need new blades -- Pronto!

But what really happens to wiper blades over time? As they age, they lose much of their flip-over flexibility thus losing their ability to wipe cleanly. They can develop a permanent set or curvature, which prevents full contact with the windshield. This is more likely to occur on vehicles that are parked outside in the hot sun all day. The sun bakes and hardens the rubber making them streak and chatter because they’ve taken a set and won’t follow the curvature of the windshield. Not only are they dangerous, but annoying.

Cold weather can also affect your blades’ life. Freezing temperatures make rubber hard and brittle, increasing the tendency to crack and split. For you snowy drivers, your wipers can become clogged with ice and snow, preventing the holder from distributing spring tension evenly over the blade. The blade then "freezes up" and leaves smudges as it skims across the glass. Driving in the snow is hard enough.

Heavy use can take a toll on your wiper blades, too. Dust, abrasives, road grime and even bug juice wear away the edge that allows the blades to wipe cleanly. As blades lose their edge, water gets under the blade and remains on the glass. The result is reduced visibility and poor wiping action.

If your blades are chattering, streaking or doing a lousy job of wiping, it is time for a replacement. Blades are cheap and easy to replace.

You should also check your windshield washer system. Do both squirters work? A nozzle could be clogged with dirt or a hose may be kinked or loose. Do the nozzles need adjusting? Does the washer pump deliver an adequate stream of solvent? The vehicle may have a weak washer pump, or a clogged, kinked or loose hose. The wiper blade performance depends on the condition of the wiper arms and holders. The amount of spring tension on the wiper arm, the number of pressure points or claws that hold the blade, and the design of the blade itself all affect the blade’s wiping ability. If the springs in the arms are worn out, the wipers may not be pressing firmly enough to wipe your windshield clean. In this case, replacing the blades won’t make any difference because the problem is weak arms not bad blades.

A Review on the OZ Superleggera Wheels

In today's consumer-driven society, we have become mostly driven toward such marketing proclamations as new and improved, lighter, larger, better and other hyperbolic statements slapped on a new label to sell an old idea. All too often we don't get what we expected.

Many people don't think too deeply about the construction and weight of the wheels they buy but rather are more concerned with appearance, followed by fitment and finally construction. In simple terms, weight = bad, wrong fitment = very bad, poor construction = dangerous.

Let's look at the first postulation: weight = bad. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that part out. First, there is the unsprung weight that has to be controlled by the dampers through an up-and-down motion. Added to that is the rotational inertia. Drive any front-wheel-drive car with heavy "sport" wheels and compare those to the stock wheel/tire combination, and you'll see that those sporty performance wheels really aren't. Once again, I turn to Dave Coleman and his words about rotational inertia.
What you need to know is that changing to tires that are 1 lb heavier will effectively add 8 lb to the car (four tires, remember) and that adding a pound to the wheels will effectively add somewhere around 6 lb to the car.
In short, think of heavy wheels in the same respect as having an extra flywheel on each corner. To lend personal perspective, consider the several wheel guides you read each year. We have to unpack, clean, position and photograph a couple hundred wheels in the course of two long days. Most importantly, we weigh them to let you, the reader, know exactly how heavy or light a wheel can be.
Before I had the Spec-2 Paradas mounted, I took the 8x18 O.Z. Superleggera to our mailroom scale for a quick test. Including center cap and minus the stem, it weighed in at a light 18.5 lb, which is really quite good.
Looking through a recent wheel guide, I noted that some 8x18s weigh up to a whopping 29.4 lb! One 7x18 busted the scale (not really) at an unbelievable 35.6 lb. Remember the formula about a pound of wheel weight? In all fairness, most of the wheels were in the mid 20s, and I'm pretty sure there's a wheel or two that weigh less than the O.Z. But I'm not going to split hairs. I'll take peace of mind and reputation over absolute minimums any day. I'm not a gambling man.

Part two of my layman's math states that wrong fitment = very bad. Unless a wheel has been TUeV certified for the car, it doesn't go on. Period. This holds true for each and every wheel I've used on my project cars, as well as those under my care, for a number of reasons. First, I know it's been tested to some standard. Second, there's the simple problem of the handling being disturbed by moving the point around which the tire turns on the ground.
Finally, there is construction. I remember driving a hotted-up Z3 that had a set of "tuner wheels" so poorly constructed, perhaps out of reconstituted beer cans, they would flex when cornering and bung themselves on the brake caliper. I didn't want to be around when that metal finally gave up.
Once again, O.Z. engineers stepped up to the task in its choice of metals. To make a lightweight and strong wheel, the company used computer modeling and finite element analysis, along with a special titanium-enriched alloy. The production process also includes a method of heat treating and shot peening borrowed from the aerospace industry. This means that O.Z. can build an 11-lb, 15-in. wheel and an 18-in. wheel with as little as 17.6 lb.
